I’ve been watching these moths flying around my garden all summer and assumed they were butterflies, as they fly during the day.
However one flew into the kitchen (I love the kitchen nature trail during the summer when I leave the door open and the light on at night) and I had the chance to observe it in more detail whilst it rested.
I took a quick snap on my phone camera so the quality isn’t great
A quick search on the internet revealed that it was the rare Jersey Tiger moth.
It seems a colony has been thriving in South London since around 2010.
What a delight to see. :)
I released it back into the garden only to see my resident bat flying around (its the first time I’ve seen him all year) so hope the moth survived…
